- Nervous I am and had been. But mad I am not, why do you fancy me mad? My senses were heightened not destroyed.
- I will calmly tell you my story to prove to you I am not mad. I never had a desire for any of his possessions or any of his and he had not wronged me, I had loved the old man. His eye maybe? Yes! It was the eye of a vulture he had. It was the eye which made me kill the old man
- This is where you fancy me mad, madmen know NOTHING. For I worked with caution and foresight. I continued to be kind to man the entire week I had planned to kill him and every night I would open his door very cautiously and put in a dark lantern when it could fit.
- I then thrust my head in, oh how amusing it was. It would take me an entire hour to put my entire head in just enough to see him sleeping on his bed. Would a madman be as wise as me?
- I would uncover just enough of the lantern so a ray of light fell upon the vultures eye. I did this every night for a week, but with the eye closed I couldn't do it as it was the eye which had vexxed me not the old man.
- Every morning I would speak with courage to the old man on how his night was . I was even so kind to make him breakfast every day.
