The narrator says he really likes the old man and is kind to him. Every night at midnight the narrator watches the old man sleep. He wants to see if his "vulture eye" is open and carefully cracks open the door and shines a thin ray of light on his eye. He thinks he is so profound by this and is very proud of himself. The next morning he always askes how the old man slept to make sure he is not suspicious.

The police then arrive because the neighbors claim to hear a shrike. The narrator invites them in to talk because of his audacity he puts the chairs right over the dead body. He begins to hear a heartbeat and believes the police are mocking him.
