- President Truman used an executive order to seize the steel mills to protect the armed forces with equipment, but the steel industry filed a restraining order with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Judge Holtzoff denied the restraining order, moving a renewed relief form to Judge Pine. Judge Pine ruled that the government had no constitutional authority to seize the steel mills.
- Judge Pine concluded that the administration could NOT seize the steel mills. The steel workers striked and the government appealed. The case moved to the Supreme Court. Justice Jackson rejected strict boundaries between congressional and presidential power, overall stating that the president does not have the power to take action like he did without the congress and using the constitution.
- I am shocked by this decision! I ordered the return of the steel mills to their owners, but they went on strike anyways for 50 days. I can't believe how limited my powers are and how I impacted the executive decision making.
