  • Have you ever wondered why giraffes have long necks? Did you know many centuries ago there were short-necked giraffes? What happened to them?!
  • It all started when there were giraffes of all sorts of sizes. Then, those who were most successful to adapt to their habitat survived. This is known as survival of the fittest
  • Meow! Yes! Survival of the fittest removes all unfavourable variations.
  • That's incorrect kitty! Survival of the fittest does not necessarily mean that. To be the “fittest”, individuals of a species who are most suited to the conditions of their habitat are the most successful to survive and grow.
  • Ohhh. I understand now!
  • And of course, as long as the species have the potential to replicate their genes and transfer them on, they will succeed for generations.
  • That's why in our generation all the giraffes have long necks! Evolution is amazing!
  • Giraffes with long necks were able to reach more food, rather than the short-necked giraffes.
  • Interesting...
  • Munch munch munch...
  • I wish I could be like him!
  • So... Imagine this...
  • Wow! I'm so glad to be this tall. Imagine being those guys down there.. starving!
  • They'll never get the ladies!
  • Uh guys.. how are we supposed to eat if we can't reach the top of this juicy tree?
  • I haven't eaten in days, what will I do?
  • Here comes a beautiful female giraffe looking to find a strong, long-necked male to mate with.
  • Hmm... Where are all the strong, long-necked giraffes?!
  • Male giraffes battle for females by "necking". They stand side by side, swinging their heads back into the ribs and legs of each other.
  • Who wants to have a family with me!
  • Wow, she is so beautiful.
  • Too bad you can't have her! Females prefer long-necked giraffes so they know he is strong and can provide the family with food by reaching very high!
  • Fight! Fight!
  • I WANT HER!
  • NO I WANT HER!
  • The long necked giraffes have an advantage, are more stronger and can win the female.
  • As more long-necked males mate with females, they produce offspring that will have a greater chance of growing up tall in height as well!
  • *Injured*
  • I won!
  • Many scientists suppose the long necks evolved to help feed each other. Our tremendous necks have everything to do with mating.
  • In Love
  • And then there were 6...
  • Mommy mommy! We want to grow up and be as tall and strong as daddy!!
  • Many Years Later... It was time for the offspring to produce their own.
  • Many centuries ago, a hypothesis was made that giraffes grew by stretching towards branches on trees to have a large neck. By doing this continuously, they then passed on to their offspring the growth they received in life , giving the progeny also long necks.
  • WOW!!
  • However, when Darwin's Origin of Species came out, the agreed hypothesis of giraffe development is that giraffes with the longest necks progressed through natural selection to their genes, and it took millions of years to produce the specimen we see today.
  • Wow kitty, today was a long, tiring day wasn't it?
  • Totally, after learning about the evolution of giraffes and natural selection, I can definitely use a nap!
  • Hopefully you gained a better understanding of giraffes!
