Where there is high elevation, there is snow. The mountainous states such as Colorado and Wyoming get a great deal of snowfall, sometimes staying on the ground for over 5 months out of the year!
The temperature varies a great deal in the West, depending on where you are. Alaska, for example, is very cold, while California and Hawaii have mild and hot temperatures and abundant sunshine.
The Pacific Northwestern states of Washington and Oregon receive a great deal of rainfall. However, the West also has areas of desert that receive little or no rain at all.
