The first Dutch settlers formed a settlement in Fort Nassau in 1614. Over the next several years, more Dutch settlements developed, until eventually the English took over in the mid 1600s.

The French and the English took sides with different Native American tribes and fought over the land. The war ended in 1763 with an English victory.

New York was the 11th state to be admitted into the Union on July 26, 1788.

The Erie Canal created a route between the Atlantic Ocean and New York City to the Great Lakes, making the transportation of goods and products faster and more efficient.

Ellis Island opens and immigrants from all over the world begin coming to America. It is located in New York Harbor and the busiest immigration center in the United States.
