- In the early 1900s, African Americans began to move north in great numbers because life in the South was so difficult due to white supremacy. Many ended up in Harlem, New York City.
- Tonight we will be presenting a play from a local Harlem playwrite!
- Harlem was originally an exclusive suburb for the white upper middle class, but they started to leave as European immigrants and African Americans started to arrive.

- Harlem became an African American neighborhood, with African American realtors and church groups buying a large block between 135th street and 5th Avenue.

- There was a rise in influential African American music, theater and art in Harlem. This is considered the Harlem Renaissance and there was greater contribution by African Americans to American culture.
- During the Harlem Renaissance, white people began to take more interest in music created by African Americans. Blues, spirituals, and jazz started being incorporated into music created by white people.
- The Harlem Renaissance was a time of progress for African American culture and help change the image of African Americans in a positive way.
