Storyboard Text

  • My name is Giovanni, but thou may know me as Saint Bonaventure. I am a monk from the 1200s in Italy.
  • Right now we are in thine 1200's but let us go to the 1700's and to Ventura, California where they think I'm a rock star.
  • The Spanish Franciscan monksbuilt a bunch of missions along Alta California. In Ventura, they named the mission after ME!
  • How cool am thy?

  • Here is a drawing of Junipero Serra showing him baptizing Native Americans and you can see the mission chain behind him
  • Junipero Serra raised the cross at the site in 1782, and the mission was supposed to be the 3rd in the mission chain, but because of unstable grounds, it ended up being the 9th.
  • Hey! We Chumash were here first!
  • Get to work digging irrigation ditches and building the mission!
  • Between 1805 and 1818 the Chumash built 7 miles of aqueducts which supplied the mission with all it's water
  • The Chumash plowed fields, raised livestock and made bricks. They were only allowed to leave the mission for a few days every year.
  • The Chumash children were taught Christianity and Spanish.
  • The Chumash were baptized to be Catholic and could not practice their own religion

  • Many crops were grown at the mission including barley, grapes, beans, coconuts, figs and corn.

  • Fire destroyed the church in 1794
  • Pirates pillaged the mission in 1818
  • In 1833 the Mexican government ordered the secularization of the missions
  • President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation in 1862 to return part of the mission to the church
  • Today the mission is used for weddings, a museum, a school and a church.
