  • Back in London December 5th 1952, a 5 day lethal fog was roaming the streets. The fog was a combination of the industrial pollution of over mined coal.
  • The Prime Minister at the time (Prime Minister Winston) ignored the issue of over mined coal and soon enough a thick, yellow fog began to emerge from the coal factories in London. Issues of pollution from factory work in London started in the 13th century and through out time it got worse.
  • Because of the lethal smog people were required to wear masks or face coverings when outside, much like now. When the fog emerged trains, cars, and public events stopped. This effected peoples everyday lives.
  • Thousands of premature deaths occurred as well as people suddenly becoming sick. The 5 day long smog may have also resulted in thousands more cases of childhood and adult asthma. It likely still effects some people health, more than 60 years later.
  • Even after a year since the accident people were still required to wear masks because the pollution was still really bad. It wasn't until the year 1993, when the Clean Air Act took action. They established smoke free areas in London, and restricted the burning of coal. At the time the government was poorly looked at due to their inefficient decisions when it came to cleaning up the pollution.
