- Lets surprise attack General Grant. He is waiting for General Buell and reinforcements to arrive. If we don't attack him before they arrive the army will be took big for use to attack.

- General Albert Johnston made a plan to attack General Grant
- On April 6, 1862, the confederate army attacked the Union army at Pittsburgh Landing. Initially, it was successful.
- The Hornet's Nest

- At a sunken road, later named the Hornet's Nest, a few union soldiers held the confederates back as back up from general Buells army.
- General Johnston!!
- Although the Confederates were successful on the first day of battle, they took one large blow, in the form of their General, Joseph Johnston.
- The second day of the battle, General P.G.T Beauregard took command of the confederate troops in place of General Joseph Johnston.
- Beauregard realized that they were hopelessly outnumbered and ordered his soldiers to retreat.
- By the end of the two days of fighting the Union had suffered 13,000 casualties including 1,700 dead.
- The Confederates had suffered 10,000 casualties and 1,700 dead.
