Storyboard Text

  • Break is over and I have to redo our social contract. . .How am I going to do this?
  • Welcome Back! Our CLO today is: I will review our old social contract so I can create a new one as a class community. I will know I have accomplished this when I have written at least one new expectation and have signed the social contract.
  • Ya!
  • We did this already!
  • Be intentional about the way you reintroduce the social contract. Your relationships and student knowledge have grown and your social contract should refelct that.
  • You're calm and relaxed from all the massages and you time, but be prepared for possible reluctance regarding classroom rules, expectations and social contract talk.
  • Well when we first make our contract we didn't know each other as well. . .Now I know that Ebony feels respected when people ask to use her gel pens and Benicio appreciates when I give him feedback on assignments right away. Our relationships are closer now so our contract has to refelct that.
  • Remember, students may have done this activity more than once or even twice in a day! Make sure your team has considered this and spaced out social contract building sessions.
  • Last time I wrote your ideas with my own handwriting, but this time the contract must be written by you because this contract was drafted by you.
  • Period 2 Social Contract
  • Don't worry, you were mentally prepared for a mini rebellion. Now bounce back and let's remind students why the contract must be refreshed.
  • Here's how we are going to do this. I am going to give each of you this four square graphic organizer and you are going to take 10 minutes to answer each question in the box. Let me show you what I am asking you to do.
  • That's it! State your point! Stand your ground!
  • WORD BANK: Dignity, Respect, Equal, Kindly, How would you like Mr. J to treat you? I would like Mr. J to treat me with ____ .
  • When drafting your new social contract please keep the following things in mind: 1) The social contract should be written in student handwriting 2) ALL students should have signed the new contract by the end of your building session
  • I want my teacher to treat me with patience when I do something wrong. Ya, me too.
  • It is important for students to write what they will write on the social contract on their own paper before writing it on the contract. Model your expectations for this activity by using a document camera or other prefered method.
  • Give students a word bank of words they could use to describe the way they would like to be treated. Sentence stems could also help students answer the questions.
  • Allow students 5 minutes to answer a question then ask them to use 30 seconds to explain what that looks like to their neighbor in a turn and listen.
  • Period 2 Social Contract
  • Do we agree that we should use a kind tone when speaking to each other?
  • Period 2 Social Contract
  • Period 2 Social Contract
  • Bring students back to whole group discussion and discuss what student responses were for the four questions. Allow 5 minutes for share outs. Next, ask students to circle their best answer for each question. That circled answer will be the one they write on the contract. If their answer is already written, ask them to write a check mark next to it.
  • Now, call students up in groups of four to record their best responses on the contract. Ask students if they agree with what has been written and ask students to extend on their responses as needed.
  • This process may span over 2 days if your class is very large. It's okay, the purpose of the contract is to lay a foundation for how students wish to be treated and to reciprocate that treatment towards their peers. You're doing great!
  • Here's a little bonus! Take some of the load off your shoulders and have a student help you gauge how well students are following the social contract! This position is called a "Social Contract Rater" a very powerful position
  • The social contract rater is a student who at the end of class evaluates the classes ability to uphold the social contract. Let's ask the creator, Ms. DeJarnett for more details. . .
  • Phew! You made it through the first day back! Awesome job laying the foundations for a safe and fun learning environment. Happy New Year!
