- Some major issues in the progressive era were urban issues like lack of fire protection, and poor living conditions.
- Houses were usually made out of wood with no fire protection, and this meant fires spread fast and were extremely deadly. Fire fighting services hadn't been implemented in many places, and in the places that had implemented it, it was very inefficient.

- Another issue were tenement houses. Jacob Riis wrote in his book "one or two dark closets, used as bedrooms, with a living room twelve feet by ten." This created a depressing and inhospitable living environment.
- Jane Addams/Social Gospel Movement, and the New York City Government worked to solve urban issues, and create a better urban environment. They regulated living conditions and landlords, and they worked to implement efficient, free fire fighting services.
- Through reform, and regulation Jane Addams improved housing conditions, and made housing safer and more enjoyable. The New York City Government united the different fire departments across the city, creating a more capable, efficient, and safe fire fighting service.
- Without the efforts from progressives, modern America would be a lot rougher, and not the global powerhouse it is. It would be considered a second or third world country without these reforms. Urban cities would be dangerous, disgusting, and unappealing.
