- Symbol - Flute
- The members of the expedition were comforted by the music, which accompanied them as the landscape grew more hostile and mysterious(Allende 122).
- To distract herself, she was concentrating on each note of the flute concerto she was listening to, the one she had heard her son rehearsing so many times(Allende 238).
- *Flute music*
- Fearing that one of the Beasts might decide to douse them with its scent, Alex held out the only possible peace offering he could think of: his grandfather's flute...(Allende 282).
- As Alex played his flute, the huge white bat moved backward, gradually retreating, untill it was motionless in one corner, like a white bear, its fangs and claws visible but neutralized(Allende 313).
- The flute is a symbol for security or safety because it helps the people on the expedition as they venture to a not so friendly place. For his mom it means the same thing because she was distracting herself with the song Alex had been practicing for a long time. The last time is when Alex pushed the white bat back so he could get the water of health which again shows the flute and its music as a means of safety.
