Gina's Story

- As a teacher, I would encourage parents to share their suggestions with me/the school. Those suggestions can make a huge difference in the lives of many students with disabilities. My classroom will always be open for this communication to occur.
- Gina's mom always believed and advocated for Gina's sucess. She advocated for Gina at every school she attended. She fought for Gina to be put in the high functioning classroom and even began a pilot program called the Peer Buddy Program.
- Despite dealing with her baby having a very rare disorder, Gina's mom still cared about making sure people could see her for what she COULD do.
- To give parents a voice, we could have a support group for the parents to share their experiences, concerns, sueggestions,etc.
- I can help parents have a voice by encouraging parents to take record videos of any questions or conversations they may want to have. Sometimes, it is difficult to set up in person meetings with parents.
- I can also help parents have a voice by writing notes to the parents and also receiving them from parents. This is a way to communicate about reminders, questions, tasks, etc.
- Gina's story is inpsiring because it shows us that believing in someone and showing them love goes a long way. Many told Gina's parents that she would not make it past 9 months of life, but they believed in her and were determined to give her a chance to live.
