- It's the house where I grew up.
- What is this place, Papa?
- The importance of this scene was to show the boy the house the man had grown up in. It gives him a little background information on his past. Another reason this scene is important is because it allows the man to gain a little nostalgia while revisiting his home. Remembering his past as they explore the home
- What?
- I know. But I wont.

- You know what, Papa.
- The importance of this scene is the trust they build past this point. Knowing they're the only people they can depend on, they need to be able to trust each other. Otherwise, they won't survive the journey to the South. Especially since the boy is very young
- You promised not to do that.
- If you break little promises you'll break big ones. That's what you said.
- "They walked out through the woods. The light was failing. They followed the flats along the upper river among huge dead trees. A rich southern wood that once held may-apple and pipsissewa.Ginseng. The raw dead limbs of the rhododendron twisted and knotted and black"
- This scene is an important factor to laying out an image of their current setting. Desolate, decayed, and devestated. They also describe a plant known as the rhododendron which is known to be a colorful pink, as twisted and knotted black. This shows the amount of pollution and contamination in the atmosphere.
- Cant we help him? Papa?
- He's been struck by lightning.
- No. We cant help him.
- This scene is important to the story because it's one of the very little times they've encountered other humans. The scorching hot area was a sudden change in the climate too. This scene shows conveys the idea that earth is currently a 'living hell'. Many other dead people are seen throughout this scorched area
- Someone had come out of the woods in the night andcontinued down the melted roadway. They followed him a good ways but at his pace they were losing the day and finally he justsat in the road and did not get up again.
