- What is this thing? it’s pointing in random directions at random things.
- Oh no I’m lost in the woods! wait… i have a compass! How does it work though?
- Thanks to this trusty compass i am able to sail super far out into the ocean and still be able to find my way back!
- A compass is a navigational tool that people use to find north while traveling or when you’re lost.
- A compass uses earths natural magnetic fields to it’s advantage. Since opposites attract the southern end of the needle inside is attracted to earths north. You can use a compass by first finding which direction you came from or which direction you need to go, lets use north for an example, to go north you follow the needle. The needle always points north, no matter which way you’re facing.
- Today compasses can be uses for sailors to go far out to sea, even to the point where you can’t see land anymore. You should always pay attention when traveling by compass, if you aren’t you will loose sense of direction and get lost. But compasses are still handy even when you get lost.
