- The story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. It's in the perspective of Scout Finch and focuses mainly on her family. Maycomb is a town that was greatly affected by the great depression and the civil war. Scouts' father, Atticus, is a lawyer who is one of the rare adults that aren't racist. The story immediately introduces the theme of racism and prejudice.
- Climax
- GUILTY!
- Everyone in Maycomb becomes to judge the Finchs' because Atticus is defending a black man. this causes the children to go through harassment and bullying by the others of the town. During the trial and through all the actions leading up to it, the children learn many things about justice, injustice, and becoming a good person.
- Falling Action
- Tom Robinson, a young black man, is accused of raping Tom Ewells' daughter. Atticus is asked to defend him, which causes a big problem for the Finchs' as other families begin to judge them. Atticus has to overcome the rampant racism that the people of Maycomb have towards Tom. Tom is represented as a symbol for a mockingbird; slaughtered for doing nothing but living his life.
- Resolution
- Tom Robinson is found guilty, even after Atticus uncovered a lot of proof to prove his innocence. This causes the children to become enraged with how the people of Maycomb let an innocent man get sentenced to the electric chair.
- Bob Ewell, the father of the woman who was accusing Tom of rape, becomes enraged with Atticus as he willingly defended the black man. He starts making threats towards the family thus Jem and Scout begin to worry for their safety.
- Ewell ends up going for Scout and Jem instead of Atticus. He goes to assault them but is stopped by Boo Radley, a man who was greatly feared by the children because of rumours, who ends up stabbing Bob and killing him.
