- "A halo surrounded the grim reaper nun, Sister Maria. (By the way --- I like this human idea of the grim reaper. I like the scythe. It amuses me.)" (Zusak 75)
- He tells the story while inputting his own little comments showing he's not human but still feels and acts significantly more human than most non-human things are portrayed
- "as for me, I remained a few moments longer. I waved. No one waved back." (Zusak 24)
- Though he is aware he can't be seen by humans he still had a want to be able to interact and as sympathy for the Book Thief by mentioning many times he wishes to comfort her.
- "I have kept here story to retell. It is one small legion I carry, each one extraordinary in its own right. Each one an attempt--- an immense leap of an attempt--- to prove to me that you, and your human existence, are worth it. Here it is, One of a handful. The book thief." (Zusak 14-15)
- He keeps certain stories about humans to prove the worth of human existence, meaning even if he wants to not interact or look at the left over humans he still ends up doing so showing he's not perfect and doesn't put humans as a lower being by having an interest in our worthiness.
