Storyboard Text

  • Mommy, what's a liberal?
  • Someone who argues with conservatives.
  • You Liberal!
  • What are conservatives?
  • People who argue with liberals.
  • YouObstructionist!
  • But what do they argue about?
  • Pretty much everything.
  • Stupid Idea!
  • But why do they argue?
  • To prove that their ideas are right and those ideas should be used when deciding to create, change, or keep policies within our nation.
  • Well, who's right and who's wrong?
  • They are both right and wrong.
  • That doesn't make any sense!
  • We all form our opinions and beliefs from our experiences, the people in our lives, and the things we read, see, and hear. Those beliefs determine how we think things are and how we believe they should be.
  • Today, boys hit me in the head with a ball and then LAUGHED at me.
  • I'm sure they didn't mean to hurt your feelings, honey. They were just being boys.
  • So, if you think you're right, and others agree, then you're right?
  • That's how many people think, but no.
  • Boys are so mean!
  • Don't Laugh! That's mean!
  • For example, imagine little Susie gets hit with a ball and boys laugh heartily. She feels embarrassed and forms the thought that boys are mean and her friend agrees.
  • Her dad then confirms that being mean is just something boys do. From here she will likely focus on the times boys are mean, thus confirming her thought that they are.
  • Really? Why not?
  • Because when we make up our minds about something, we tend to close our minds to other ideas and perspectives.
  • But how does thinking you're right lead to yelling?
  • Some people try and shout their ideas and opinions at others in hopes of being heard. This rarely works because people generally stop listening when they're angered and become defensive instead.
  • So they don't listen to each other but yell and name call a lot even though that doesn't work?
  • Yes. People also dig up examples to prove their ideas are right and the others' are wrong. Teams form based on who likes which ideas. Those teams have become the republicans vs. democrats or conservatives vs. liberals.
  • Crush them!
  • LOSERS!
  • Beat them no matter what!
  • Oh yeah!Take that!
  • It was funny until you cried.
  • I was hurt and you guys laughed at me.
  • Teams? Like Soccer where you're trying to win?
  • Yeah, don't you like funny home videos? People laugh about falls and getting hit with things all the time.
  • True, but before posting those videos for a laugh, they make sure the person is ok.
  • Exactly. And the game can turn quite ugly if the main goal is simply to make the other team lose not matter what.
  • I thought we were supposed to be nice to each other.
  • Good point. I can see how it's more kind to check on someone after a fall or hit instead of just laughing about it right away.
  • Sorry for laughing before making sure you were alright. Are you okay?
  • I'm feeling much better now, thanks.
  • Just because some people are ugly to one another doesn't make it right. There are better ways of handling disagreements.
  • You Liberal!YouObstructionist!
  • So, what should people do when they disagree?
  • Sit down, talk with one another, ask questions for better understanding, admit to being wrong if you are, and then come up with solutions together.
  • Talking it out seems way better than yelling and being mean.
  • Treating people who have different views respectfully generally leads to much better outcomes. Let's look at two examples...
