- The devil is waiting for them, hell is gapping for them.. the flames.. wallow them up (Edwards, 46).He is giving hell human qualities.

- The spider hanging over a pit of fire ( Edwards 48). This symbolizes how small we are in comparison to God.

- Edwards repeadidly used the Word Wrath throughout his sermon this was used to Provo-ck fear in the people who heard him. "The wrath of God burns against them..."(Edwards)

- "Haste and escape from your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed" (Edwards 50). He is visually describing a place you can go to not be consumed by the flames.
- Imagery
- Oh sinner! consider the fear ful danger you are in: it is a great furnace of wrath...(Edwards 8). Its compareing the sinners danger to a furnace of wrath without useing like or as.
- Metaphors
- "Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead..."(Edwards 4). He is comparing human wickedness to lead by useing "as".
