- Hester meets up with Dimmsadale to discuss Chillingworth. Pearl runs into the forest to play.
- The Agreement
- Hester tells Dimmesdale that Chillingworth is her husband. Dimmesdale rants on about his failure to recognize Chillingworth. He then blames Hester for not telling him earlier Dimmesdale forgives her.
- Excitement
- Hester suggests that Dimmesdale should run away from Boston and start a new life somewhere else. Dimmesdale says he doesn't know if he can make it on his own. Hester says that thou shall not go alone indicating she and her daughter are going with
- Pure Pearl
- Dimmesdale steps up and gets the courage to run away with Hester. Realizing he has become weak from hiding his guilt.
- Hester is delighted that Dimmesdale agrees to run away with her and pearl. Hester unpins the scarlet A and tosses it into the river banks and lets down her young hair showing her youth. The A does not go down the river bank to symbolize that her sin can not be thrown away so easily.
- Meanwhile, Pearl is out playing in the woods. She is playing with nature and is in the sunlight symbolizing she is young and pure
