  • Oh boy!
  • Ok, Scott. We're heading to the North!
  • My master has died, so I should be free since I'm not a slave anymore!
  • What!? I'm no longer owned by a slave owner anymore. Why am I still not free?
  • Scott, you cannot be a free man. You are a black man, so you cannot sue for your freedom
  • In the 1830's, a slave named Dred Scott was taken from Missouri by John Emerson, an army surgeon and his owner, to Illinois and Minnesota for several years.
  • I declare that all African Americans, whether free or enslaved, as not citizens.
  • Unfortunately, Scott's master had died due to tuberculosis while traveling. However, the Missouri compromise made an area, including Minnesota, free, so Scott decided to sue for his.
  • The Supreme Court made a great decision. We can continue making money!
  • 11 years later, Scott took his argument to the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the court didn't agree with his belief.
  • At least it was a good attempt...
  • The court soon came to a conclusion that all African Americans weren't free and were still considered as slaves/property. This single judgement also made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
  • You can't do this! What am I going to do now?
  • After that, the Southern people were pretty happy about the decision. However, Northerners, including Abraham Lincoln, were very disappointed and felt that all states would be forced to hold slaves states soon.
  • Hope the Supreme Court doesn't make ALL the states include slaves...
  • Sadly, Dred Scott was forced to be a slave once more. Thanks to the Supreme Court's decision, this one event riled up the North people even more, and was made into another reason why the South seceded from the U.S.
