- The men returned to Aeaea and buried Elpenor after performing all of the necessary burial rites.
- Circe warned Odysseus and his soldiers that they must pass through the island of the Sirens, who will use their songs to lead the men to their deaths.
- If Odysseus insisted on hearing the Sirens' melodies, she suggested putting beeswax in their ears and tying him to the mast.
- The crew must next sail between Scylla, a terrifying six-headed monster, and Charybdis, a whirlpool that drags entire ships down into the sea three times a day, she explained. Only the ship Argo has made it through these creatures unscathed.
- The sailors put wax in their ears and lash Odysseus to the mast as they pass the island of the Sirens, and they pass without incident. They cautiously sailed past the vortex until they arrived at Charybdis, and Scylla snatched and ate six men. The guys, overcome with sadness and sympathy, flee as quickly as they can.
- They then arrived to the Sun's Island. Odysseus intended to stay away from the island entirely, but Eurylochus urged that the crew needed to recuperate.
