- Jean Jacques Dessalines was born into slavery and remained a slave until the war in 1791 when he joined the slave rebellion that broke out in the colony of Saint Domingue and became lieutenant to Toussaint L’Ouventure against the British and Spanish and given the nickname “Tiger”.

- Toussaint had gained rule and had power but Napoleon Bonaparte wanted back French rule and sent a french force to gain back white rule. Dessalines appeared to be siding with the French.

- But soon after Toussaint's capture by the French, Dessailianes saw no change in the treatment of the slaves which the French promised him if he sided with them. Dessaline then gathered back up the rebels to resume the resistance to French rule.Dessalines succeeded Toussaint after his capture and became the leader of the rebellion, his goal was to defeat the French and end slavery once and for all.
