- Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick
- Max is big and feels like he is not smart. He lives with his grandparents. Gram and Grim
- Kevin is called Freak. He is small and can't walk well, but he is brave and smart. He lives with his mom called Fair Gwen.
- Chapter 1: The unvanquished truth
- I have robot legs. buzz buzz! Robots are the best!
- Daycare when they are very young
- That little freak with the crutches looks mean. I won't kick him
- Stop hugging me! You don't care about me. No one does!
- Why do you kick everyone?
- Chapter 2: Up from Down Under
- But I'm not even smart. There is nothing in my head You are scared of me for nothing
- We have to watch that boy. We don't know if he will hurt us in our sleep

- Max, Gwen called to say she is sorry for running away from you and ask if you want to come to dinner.

- These boys are the same age, but they are very different. They will become friends and help each other a lot.

- Max remembers how he first met Freak at daycare when they were little kids. Max was called kicker because he kicked everyone who tried to hug him. They thought their hugs were medicine he needed, and he didn't want to be touched. Freak hit people with his crutches and pretended his leg braces made him a robot.

- Grim worries that Max will be dangerous like his father because his father killed his mother when Max was little and his father is in jail. They make him a room in the basement that smells bad and has ugly walls. sometimes Max likes it. He hides under the bed and imagines having no worries
- Chapter 7: Walking high above the world
- Isn't that Killer Kane's kid? His dad is still in jail.
- Max living with his grandparents
- Max is a hero. He saved the little crippled boy! He is a man now!
- When they are in 7th grade Freak (Kevin) Moves to Max's neighborhood. He seems very smart and bossy even to adults.
- Chapter 8: Dinosaur Brain
- Max helps Freak get his toy bird out of the tree and they start to become friends. Freak asks Max where he lives so max pulls Freak to his house in a red wagon and shows him the basement where he lives. It is dark and smelly but Max likes his basement room and calls it the Down Under

- While the boys are in Max's room, Gwen starts looking for Kevin. When she sees he is in the basement bedroom with Max. She acts really scared, grabs Kevin and carries him away. She looks at Max like he is a monster
- Chapter 9: Life is dangerous
- Someday I'm going to go into that building and be the first bionic human with robot implants
- Max's grandma seems scared to talk to him or touch him. When she is telling him about Gwen calling she also says that Gwen was a friend of Max's mom and that Max and Freak were born in the same hospital near the same time.
- Chapter 10: Rats or Worse
- Gwen tells Max that she hated his dad and thought he was crazy. She was scared when she saw him because he looks like his dad who was a murderer and thought Max might be bad too. Max has a great time laughing with Freak and his mom and goes home happy.
- Chapter 7: Walking high above the world
- At the fireworks the boys meet a bully named Blade who is mean to them. Freak talks back to the bully. The bully wants to beat them up, but the police come.

- Max puts Freak on his shoulders so he can see the fireworks better. The bully Blade comes back and wants to hurt them
- Freak tells max to walk in the lake because the water is gross but the Blade gets his feet stuck in the mud and falls in face first and his friends pull him out. Now he is really mad
- The police come and Blade and his friends run away. Even the police recognize Max and know that Max's dad is a murderer in jail. But from then on Max carries Freak everywhere and they call themselves Freak the Mighty
- Hey, Police we need help
- The police bring the boys home and Max's grandparents are really proud of him! Max doesn't tell his grandparents about how Tony D has knives and guns because he doesn't want them to worry.
- But I'm not even smart. Freak is the one who saved me!
- Freak makes Max start looking up words in the dictionary to make him smarter.
- Use the dictionary, look it up!
- The boys walk all over town that summer pretending to be knights on a quest. On one of their journeys Freak tells Max about his plans to get robotic legs.
- Freak plans a treasure hunt. The boys wait till night to fish an old purse out of the storm drain.
- Max puts Freak on his shoulders so he can see the fireworks better. The bully comes back and wants to hurt them so freak tells max to walk in the lake because the water is gross so the bully falls into a d
