  • Farmers that served as soldiers throughout the revolutionary war did not receive compensation once they returned to their farms. By the 1780s, farmers were struggling immensely to make money. Businesses in Boston began demanding immediate payment in exchange for goods, neglecting to allow farmers to use credit or to barter as they used to. The rebellion continued to escalateover time, with more attacks on government buildings occurring.

  • Shay's rebellion proved that a government under the AOC lacked control. The chaos of the country pulled many civilians to believe that a strong federal government was necessary. Federalists used the rebellion to further spread their beliefs and grow their following.
  • The Whiskey Rebellion began in response to unfair taxation upon small whiskey producers. After the revolution, many states were in debt. To soothe the debt of the nation, Hamilton suggested different economic reforms, such as taxation on whiskey. Large producers were taxed six cents per gallon annually and as they sold more product, they received more tax breaks. Small producers were forced to pay nine centsper gallon in taxes and had to payentirely in cash.
  • Many producers refused to pay the tax. Tax collectors were threatened with defiance and violence. Violence initially broke out on September 11, 1791. While on his collection route, a tax collector was attacked by men dressed as women. The men stripped the tax collector naked before feather and tarring him. After stealing his horse, the men stranded the collector in the woods. Violent incidents escalated throughout the next few years. The destruction of Bower Hill and threats made to Pittsburgh eventually convinced Washington to involve the militia. The rebellion's presence faded as Washington pursued rebels.
  • The Whiskey Rebellion was the first time in our nation's history where federal authority was enforced. Washington had never before used federal authority in such a way, it was revolutionary during the dispute between federalists and democratic-republicans.
