- Isabel asks Becky why Ruth is always with Madam Lockton. Becky says that it's because most ladies have personal maids. She gets angry at the answer and learns about a slave girl like Isabel that would rebel against Madam Lockton. The slave girl was badly beaten, resulting in her arm broken, which made her useless to Madam Lockton.
- Madam keeps Ruth because her friends have personal maids, so having one makes Madam seem like more of a lady. She's obtained a liking to her because she is small and quiet.
- Is Ruth okay? Why does Madam keep her with her?
- Becky, the Lockton's servant, explains to Isabel that since the Locktons are loyalists, they must be loyalists too. Isabel asks why Mr. Lockton said he was a patriot on the dock. She also tell her the basic expectations of the Locktons.
- Listen to me good. Them that feeds us, they're loyalists, Tories. That means we're Tories too.
- Their opinions on the king or independence can change, but what won't change is that Madam likes lemon cake with her tea.
- He was just saying that to protect himself.
- But Master Lockton claimed he was a Patriot on the docks
