King Charles' Crimes Against Humanity
The English Civil War was between the Cavaliers and the Roundheads [Monarchy (Charles I) and the Parliament). The Cavaliers expected a quick victory, but the Roundheads under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell won the war. It started when Charles I wanted complete control over the Parliament.
Puritan Rule
Now remember to read Genesis 3:13 and if we catch you dancing, you will have a heavy fine or jail time.
The execution of Charles I took place after the Parliament tried him and convicted him of treason, with the punishment being death. This also sent shock waves throughout Europe, and caused other monarchs to tighten their grip on their country.
The Glorious Revolution
Get out! We don't like you, because you want to impose Catholicism on us!!
After the war, they made changes to the Commonwealth, including establishing a House of Commons, and establishing England as a Commonwealth. They abolished the monarchy temporarily, driving Charles II out.
Britain Imposes Rules on Its Government
Tories Vs. Whigs
Under the Puritan rule, life was very though and strict, with Oliver Cromwell reigning as the dictator. He closed all theaters, banned dancing and gambling and made people read the Bible and worship constantly. Eventually they brought back the monarchy.
Charles II was now on the throne, restoring the monarchy. However, once he died, James II became the monarch. However, Parliament feared James and Catholicism, so they invited James' Protestant daughter and William to rule. James fled, and this became the Glorious Revolution.
Parliament decided to make new rules to limit William and Mary's power. They made the English Bill of Rights, and made a limited government in England. Eventually two main political parties emerged- the Tories and the Whigs. These are the events that happened during and after the English Civil War.
