  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion are destructive.
  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, on page 75-76, as soon as Les Goodman's car starts, the neighbors start to accuse him of being a part of whatever was going on. This scene supports the theme because it shows how suspicious each neighbor is, and how fast they can accuse people of things when they're suspicious of someone or something. To add on, fear and suspicion are destructive because on page 82-83, Charlie killed the dark figure without knowing who it was, and he later found out that he killed his neighbor, Pete Van horn. This scene also supports the theme because it shows how quickly Charlie's suspicion and fear got to him that he shot the figure without knowing who it was. Finally, on page 85, after Charlie killed Pete, all of the neighbors continue to accuse and yell and scream at each other violently. Some people accuse their neighbors, some accuse the kids. This part of the story supports the theme because it shows how fast everyone got scared and started accusing each other of things, and even getting violent with one another. In conclusion, fear and suspicion are destructive because as soon as something suspicious happens, a whole community of people can start to turn on each other. When Les Goodman's car starts and everyone gets mad at him and starts to accuse him of things, when Charlie killed someone out of fear without knowing that it was a friend of his, and finally in the end when the whole community turns violent and accuses one another of being a part of the problem.
