  • Congress passed new laws to get men to build an army. A draft signed up all men ages 21-30 and extended the age to 18-45 later on. By the end of the war, 24 million Americans had signed up for the draft. Over 4.7 million served in the war.

  • Propaganda Committee on Public Information was created to make people support the war. Propaganda filled newspapers and magazines with stories about the good side of the war, had famous people selling liberty bonds, had songwriters write songs, and sent speakers to churches and schools.
  • The National War Labor Board was created to settle differences between companies and workers so workers would not go on strike. Strikes had to be stopped, because we needed the good to the war. So, the board opened up jobs for everyone. As men were leaving to fight in the war, we needed to somehow replace them. Women and blacks were given jobs that were never given to them before.
  • Food Administration was set up to make sure troops had enough food at the front. Americans were asked to grow more food on farms, grow food in gardens, and don't be wasting the food. Sometimes they had to go without some food such as 'meatless Mondays and wheatless Wednesday.'
