  • Giving a speech or a presentation can be stressful.
  • I'll never be able to give this speech.
  • The key to successful speaking is confidence. How does a speaker build confidence?

  • Now that the presenter has the speech content organized and is confident in the material content, it is time to use this material to practice.
  • What items are important during a set up? Spacing & Layout Equipment Lighting Temperature
  • All of these items are important during set up and are will affect the success of the speech.

  • Spacing and the layout of the presentation area helps the presenter allows for easy movement and interactions. Being able to move around and use the visuals or equipment without problems is very important. 
  • 
  • The space should be free of unnecessary items. It should not be cluttered. This will prevent any injuries of the presenter and/or the audience. It will also prevent distractions. 
  • The presenter should know how to work the equipment being used, such as a projector, a remote control, a microphone or any other items such as visual aides. It should be placed in the proper area so that it can be accessed easily.
  • Proper placement of equipment and furniture along with a tidy area will build more confidence and allow for an easy presentation.
  • Temperature is important for the presenter and the audience. If the presenter is uncomfortable, they will not be able to concentrate. If the audience is not comfortable, they will not be able to concentrate and may even complain or leave.

  • Setting the right temperature will make the speech easier to give and will keep the attention of the audience. 
  • Correct lighting is a priority when giving a speech. This applies to all types including, in person, video or live web speeches.

  • Making sure that the lighting is dark enough so that a projector imagine can be seen is necessary, but balancing the light source so that people needing to walk will not get hurt is also needed.

  • The presenter should make sure the lighting allows for them to be seen by the audience at all times. 
  • Once the set up is complete, it is time to rehearse the speech. This step must not be skipped!

  • Rehearsing a speech will allow the presenter to use good timing, become more familiar with the space and equipment being used, and build confidence in the content to be presented.
  • Practice and familiarity are keys to building the confidence needed to give a public speech. 
  • Building confidence through preparation is a surefire way to enjoy the speech and deliver the information successfully.
