In 2022, BJ was VERY excited to be offered a teaching and course design job at Humber. BJ learned ALOT about teaching in a very short time! It was overwhelming , but she was very happy.

I can do better!
After a year, exhausted and painfully aware of the mistakes she had made along the way, BJ decided to go back to school to learn pedagogy. She was determined to be great at her new role and she felt motivated!

BJ set out with learning goals in mind:a) learn how to design and deliver materials in a effective, impactful, coherent and appropriate way.b) learn how to evaluate the learning that takes place in her classroom.

When school began she realized that the M.Ed. program allowed her to tailor her efforts and learning to her own context! This meant she could use her time to study what mattered the most to her.

Inspired by the course materials, BJ began to set performance goals:a) publish some workb) tailor her course load to advance other projectsc) conduct research

BJ began selecting readings that appealed to her performance goals. One day she had an epiphany when she read this quote:
“the purpose of a performance goal orientation is to gain positive judgments of personal competence, whereas the purpose of a learning, mastery, or task goal orientation is actually to increase one's competence.”
Skluzavka: 7
Oh no! I fear that cherry picking assignments has stopped me from developing important competencies that I need to meet my learning goals!

BJ wished she had the self-regulation to tackle learning something completely new. She felt exhausted from trying to accomplish her learning and performance goals. She reflected that it was easier to apply herself when she stuck to topics she was interested in. She also felt that the rewards from performance achievements were more immediate.
Skluzavka: 9
It seems I am learning about myself too.
Now she was forced to ask herself whether she had truly desired to be a more competent teacher or whether she had felt the M.Ed. credential was necessary for positive judgment of her competence.

BJ remains determined to become a better teacher! She is now more consciously aware of how her intrinsic motivation interacts with her own self-regulated learning. This has taught her something in general about how intrinstic and external motivation and learning interact in the context of learning.
