- In the United States alone, nearly 20 people are physically abused by their romantic partner every minute1
- Some early signs of abuse include showing extreme possessiveness, jealously, and insecurity, isolating you from friends and family, having explosive outbursts, and checking your phone/social media without permission. Other signs include verbal insults, pressure to have sex, use drugs, or drink alcohol, and intimidation (threats, physical dominance, destroying property), and any physical harm.3,4Veiled threats such as "you don't want to see me mad" are a sign that verbal and emotional abuse could become physical.2
- Why do you always ask to see your friends and family? Are you saying you don't love me anymore? Give me your phone so I can make sure you haven't been talking to other women. Do it or I'll get mad, and you don't want to see me mad.
- Abusers usually learn their behavior from family, friends, popular culture, or overall structural inequities in our society, perpetuating a cycle of violence and abuse.
