- hello saanvi! we are having a cricket match in oir society, but only people below the age of 15 are eligible to participate. i dont know if vani and rishi are eligible or not.

- when i asked them, they gave me this riddle and i dont know how to solve it.

- Rishi is twice as old as Vani. 5 years ago his age was thrice of Vani. Find their present ages. this is all i know.
- dont worry, we can solve this using linear equations.

- its okay, its pretty easy! In this word problem, the ages of Rishi and Vani are unknown quantities. lets assume vani's present age is 'x' and that of rishi is '2x'. therefore, according to the question we get the linear equation as: 2x-5=3(x-5)
- wow! you made it look so easy. would you mind solving it too?

- yes sure! now we will open the bracket on the LHS, 2x-5=3x-15.now we will take the like terms on one side, -5+15=3x-2x. now we can easily calculate the value of 'x'.we will get, x=10.
- which means vani's age is 10 years and that of rishi is 20.
