  • Chapter 11
  • Jonas, singled out from his peers, is chosen as the Community's new Receiver of Memory. This is the highest honored Assignment in the Community and requires years of painful and difficult training. This training will come from The Giver, who was the previous Receiver.
  • I'm first going to be passing onto you the memory of snow. This will be one of countless memories that we will have to endure and go through together. Some will be painful and some won't. This painful and difficult training will provide you with everything you need for your run as receiver.
  • The Giver Transmits the Memory of Snow to Jonas
  • This painful and challenging training will be done throgh the transmission of memories. The Giver will transmit immense amounts of memories from the past to Jonas so that he can learn the truth about the world and help him in his run as Receiver. These transmissions are extremely painful for The Giver and Jonas, as they both experience them vividly . For a memory to be transmitted, The Giver rubs Jonas's back.
  • Wow! This is about to be very interesting. I can barely wait to see this snow thing!
  • Lay down on the bed with your back facing up. I'm going to be rubbing your back to transmit the memory directly to you.
  • The first memory that The Giver transmits to Jonas is the memory of snow. This transmission is so significant as it introduces Jonas to what his training will tend to be like and allows The Giver to test memory transmission ability and how well it work for the next few years. It marks the start of an extremely challenging and painful process that will take years to perfect and set up Jonas for his time as Receuver and for his unique knowledge that will benefit him in his bright future.
