Storyboard Text

  • This is Mary Church Terrell. She was a African American activist who is remembered for her tireless activism. She fought for racial equality and women suffrage.

  • She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 23, 1863, to Robert Reed Church and Louisa Ayers. Both her parents were affluent and her father was even on of the country's first millionaires. Her parents split up when she was a baby, but maintained a close relationship with their kids.
  • Thanks to her father's financial support she attended Antioch College’s innovative preparatory school, before going on to Oberlin Academy and then Oberlin College. At Oberlin College, she choose to enroll in the 4-year course that was typically reserved for men, instead of the 2-year course for women. She graduated with honors in 1884.
  • She was a teacher for mostly Black children. She eventually traveled and studied in Europe, and came back fluent in French, German, and Italian. Then continued teaching before having to resign due to marrying Robert H. Terrell
