- "By the way, you know about the big German attack's expected any day now?"
- Hardy is messy and disorganised.
- "I know. It's a frightful bit of luck."
- Raleigh is very naive. He thinks he got into this company with luck.
- "Oh, I know old Dennis's temper! I remember once at school he caught some chaps in a study with a bottle of whiskey. Lord! the roof nearly blew off. He gave them a dozen each with a cricket stump."
- Raleigh will receive a big surprise when he sees Stanhope...
- Hardy and Osborne talk. Hardy reveals Stanhope's reputation as a heavy drinker and the planned big attack.
- Just some good luck I guess, because my uncle didn't want to help me.
- He is going to write to Madge about me and I will look like an alcoholic.
- "How did you - get here?"
- Raleigh arrives and speaks to Osborne. He reveals his childhood friendship with Stanhope.
- Clearly he is faking to get out of this place.
- "It's this beastly neuralgia. It seems to be right inside this eye."
- Raleigh also reveals that Stanhope is dating his sister and that they may even marry. He tells Osborne that Stanhope used to be very strict on drinking and smoking, making Stanhope look like a hyprocrit.
- Come on Stanhope, it's late. Just go to bed.
- "I censor his letters- cross out all he says about me."
- Stanhope arrives at the dugout and is sceptical of how Raleigh arrived at his company. Raleigh is shy but Osborne helps relieve the tension.
- Hibbert arrives from duty and mentions that he has neuralgia. Stanhope thinks he is faking to get out of the war early and calls him "another little worm trying to wriggle home".
- Stanhope is drunk and talks about censoring Raleigh's letters so Madge doesn't think badly of him. Osborne has to calm him down and put him to bed.
- He is too drunk to think clearly.
