- mesopotamia is located in iraq, asia between two rivers that helped civilization succeed called the tigris river and the euphrates river.
- the people moved to the foothills of zagros mountains in northern mesopotamia. soon the foothills did not have enough land to grow food cause of the increasing population, therefore the villages started suffering from food shortages. driven by the need to grow food, people moved out of the foothills onto the plains known as sumer!
- the rivers werent always helpful. in spring the rivers flooded the plains. they built levees and irrigation systems to solve this problem
- the irrigation system passed through many villages as it carried water for the fields. it needed constant repair because it kept getting clogged with silt. since villages were connected by this irrigation system they had to work together to mantain it.as they worked together the communities became larger. soon villages grew into towns then cities with thousands of people
- as cities grew larger the main thing people fought over was the right to use more water sometimes cities closer to where the river began blocked cities farther from where the river began. this often led to war and bloodsheed
- the sumerians went from small villages to large cities. this was because of all their advancements. they dug moats to keep out enemies. they built an irrigation to control water supply. they even had cuneiform and they built the wheel and the arch
