  • ORIGINAL ENCOUNTER
  • **Whimpering in pain**............can't ..... do this ...... any longer
  • Wait up! Don't move just yet.
  • EMERGING IDENTITIES
  • But i can't.... feel my legs.....*grunts* I ..... *pushes body back*
  • Okay, here's what we're gonna do. I will pull these off of you and you do your best to move back.
  • *shivers* Please .....help me up....
  • That's it, you're doing good. Just a little more, slowly......Here's my hand.
  • EMPATHY
  • *sobbing in frustration*How ...........will I be able to go back to work??? And.... what about my ..... *looks down*Oh, God.
  • Mara, I'm Nurse Janice. You are in the hospital. I know you're dazed and confused as to why this happened. I would be to. We had to amputate your leg because the doctors could no longer save it as it was badly damaged by the debris that fell on you.
  • Your baby is fine. I caught on that you were pregnant because you kept your hand in your stomach the whole time. You held me and tried to tell me in the ambulance, but you lost conciousness.
  • Initial interaction between the Nurse Janice and Mara, a storm victim.
  • SYMPATHY
  • Oh, thank God. But.... what happens now?I'm ...... I don't......May I call anyone?
  • I understand that you're scared. I'm a mom too. You have to remain strong for your baby. We just have to work on your recovery and monitor you over the next few days.
  • Nurse-patient relationship is starting to form.Nurse Janice has evaluated the situation. Calm and quick on her feet, she helps and guides the patient on what to do as patient is under a lot of pain and stress.
  • RAPPORT
  • Hey... I'm just glad you're here now. I don't know if I could do this without you. But Nurse Janice was here for me the whole time. I don't know how I'll be if it weren't for her.
  • Honey, I'm sorry I wasn't home.... If I had known..... I wouldn't have left ... for work this morning.... I am very sorry, honey. I don't ...... understand. What's... how...... How are you??
  • Relating to the patient, Nurse Janice calls her by her name and assures her by confirming her whereabouts and what happened. She continues to inspirit her out of anxiousness about the baby.
  • RAPPORT
  • Thank you very much, Nurse. Thank you for taking care of Mara and the baby. And for calling me and for waiting til I get here. Just, thank you so, so much.
  • It's my job, Sir. I'm sure she would have helped me also if it was the other way around. I'll give you two some time alone.
  • She relates to the patient emotionally by sharing that she is a mother too and that as a mother, she has to be strong for her child (saying this gives hope to the patient as she has something to look forward to despite what happened). Nurse Janice has also contacted the patient's partner ahead as she is already stable and so she doesn't feel alone.
  • I already called your boyfriend. He is on his way here. And i'll be here if you have more questions or need anything. You're doing just alright, Mama.
  • Nurse Janice stays until the patient's partner has arrived. Incase, the partner has questions or if they need anything more. Patient is relieved by the presence of her partner and is very grateful that he has been contacted.
  • Patient's partner expresses so much gratitude for rescuing her, nursing her back to health, making sure the baby is fine, contacting him and waiting until he's present. The nursing needs of the individual have been met. Both the patient and loved one is assured and comforted amidst the situation.
