- I just got expelled from Pencey Prep, what a bummer
- After that, Holden and Stratlater argue, Holden gathers up his money and decides to leave Pencey Prep for good and explore New York. On a train ride, Holden meets the mother of a kid he knew at pencey. Sometime along these events, Holden buys a red hunting cap, which he uses to self-alienate himself from society. After arriving in New York, Holden takes a cab to the Edmont hotel. He visits the lavender room, which is a club. While visiting, Holden acts older than his age, attempting to buy alcoholic drinks from the waiter. He interacts with a few girls who were present at the club, still using a much older facade of himself.

- Date? With who?
- Yo Holden, can i borrow your jacket? I got a date?
- huh. I used to know her.
- some girl named Jane.
- Some time after those events, Holden meets up with a hooker named Sunny. Things go south, and she demands $10 from him when he only wants to give $5. This results in Holden getting beaten up and having his money stolen.
