  • Ignatius as a page and in the Court 1506St Ignatius was a page in the court of a relative Juan Velazquez de Cuellar. He was very vain and his ambitions were set at very high standards. In 1517 Ignatius became a knight under the service of another relative Antonio Manrique de Lara, duke of Najera and viceroy of Navarre, he undertook many military missions and was even included on a diplomatic undertaking.
  • Battle of Pamplona 1521Spain had captured the Southern Part of the Kingdom of Navarre in 1512 but Henry d’Albret the son of the last King wanted to reclaim his land, with his own forces bolstered by large French Army. Helped by the French the people in the town rebelled and the situation went from bad to worse. Many officials fled but Ignatius and the garrison held out in the citadel. One day while Ignatius was patrolling the ramparts a cannon ball fired and hit the stone defence behind him wounding one leg and shattering the other, the defenders in disarray surrendered shoutly. He was then tended by the French who admired his courage and sent back to Loyola where he caught an infection and was expected to die but miraculously recovered.
  • Founding of the Jesuits 1540The order of the Jesuits was approved by Pope Paul III and out of the choice of his companions St Ignatius became the first General of the order. The Society of Jesus developed fast under his leadership, at the time of his death there were 1,000 Jesuits divided into 12 administrative units, called provinces. Three were in Italy, a few in Spain and others dotted around Europe and even as far as India and Brazil. During his life he created schools and sent missions and made huge impact on the Roman Catholic Church and was, beautified in 1606 by Pope Paul V, canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV and in 1922 he was made the Saint of spiritual retreats and also considered a patron of soldiers by Pope Pius XI.
