- Yup! New strains of bacteria are created via mutations. Certain medicines, such as penicillin, may develop a resistance in some bacteria, making them immune to their destruction. Bacterial evolution is an illustration of natural selection and gives credence to Darwin's theory of evolution.
- I get what you're saying, but how are these types of viruses so resistant to antibiotics. Usually medicine does the trick when you're sick.
- Good question! Bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics are more likely to survive and reproduce. Directional selection enables antibiotic resistance mutations to occur more often over several generations.
- I'm sorry to hear that John. Let's just hope that the doctor gives you medicine that works. Although certain superbug bacteria could be responsive to antibiotics, others might not be. While most bacteria are killed by antibiotics, some will develop resistance and survive. This is an example of evidence of natural selection because the environment chooses which members of a population are most suited to survive.
