- Oh! You both finally came back from your trips to Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands!
- I've heard they are both great places! Can you tell us about the management of natural resources there?
- The forest cover in Lakshadweep primarily consists of coconut palm plantations. In the island, organic farming is promoted. Coastal plantations have been raised to act as bio-shields against the adverse impacts of coastal erosion, high waves, and surges. Marine protected areas are established to conserve biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of marine resources.
- The islands depend on rainwater harvesting, and every household is mandated to have rainwater harvesting systems. Desalination plants are set up in some islands to provide potable water. The Union Territory depends on imported coal, petroleum, and other fuels. However, there is a focus on renewable energy. Due to its geographic location, the island group has a high potential for wind and solar energy.
- The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Forest and Plantation Development Corporation (ANIFPDC) oversees timber operations and ensures sustainable forest management. Mangrove cover is significant and plays a vital role in protecting the coastline. Strict regulations are in place against poaching and illegal wildlife trade. The tribal communities, who have lived on these islands for generations, play a role in conservation efforts.
- Rainwater harvesting is promoted given the substantial rainfall the islands receive. Proper management practices are in place to monitor and regulate groundwater extraction. The energy needs of the islands are primarily met through imports. However, there's an increasing focus on harnessing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The aim is to make these islands a green energy hub.
