- ¨¨We are given to understand that at one time you dismissed your servant, Abigail Williams.¨
- ¨Elizabeth, tell the truth!¨
- ¨That is true sir, My husband is a good man and is never drunk but you see, I got sick after having my last baby and I saw my husband somewhat turning from me as if he fancied this girl. But no he is not a lecher.¨
- ¨She spoke nothing of lechery, and thisman has lied!¨
- ¨You will not! Begone! Begone, I say! Why do you come yellow bird?¨
- ¨She only thought to save my name¨
- ¨I´m right here! I´m not hurting her!¨
- ¨From the beginning this man has struck me true. By my oath to Heaven, I believe him now, and I pray you call back his wife. I believe him this girl has always struck me false!¨
- ¨A little while ago you were afflicted. Nowit seems you afflict others; where did you find thispower?¨
- ¨Abby you musn´t!¨
- ¨Abby you musn´t! Mr. Danforth! I have never had contatc with the Devil.
- Elizabeth is brought to back up her husband John´s testimony about whether he had an affair with Abigail or not but she denies this to protect him. This leads Danforth to tell the Marshal to take her out of the courtroom and people start to think John is a liar.
- ¨Don´t touch me- Don´t touch me!¨
- After Elizabeth exits the courtroom, John is called a liar but Hale speaks up and says how he believes him. When Abigail hears this, she pretends to see a yellow bird and the girls pretend to see it too going along with her. Abigail begins acting as if the bird is Mary and is telling her that she wants to tear her face.
- ¨I say—I say—You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore! God is dead!¨
- ¨What are you? You are combined withanti-Christ, are you not? I have seen your power; you will not deny it! What say you, Mister?¨
- ¨Excellency-¨
- The girls chime in with Abigail and begin repeating everything Mary says to make it look like she has cast her spirit onto them and making them say and do things. Nobody believes her but John and Hale as they see she is weakening from not being believed and not being able to defend what is going on. She has no way whatsoever to defend herself and prove that she has not done such a thing.
- End of Act 3
- Once Mary realized she would not be believed, she began pretending with the other girls and began yelling that John is working with the Devil. Mary begins to lie about John waking her up throughout the night forcing her to sign the Devil´s book saying he will kill her if she doesn´t.
- Danforth is asking John to confess to being befouled with Hell. Hale has an objection to this because he knows none of this is true but Danforth wants to hear nothing of the sort so he storms out of the courtroom and slams the door behind him.
