  • One major theme of "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that "Judging people too quickly can lead to negative consequences." One example that supports this theme is on page 77, when one neibor says that she has seen Les Goodman staring at the sky in the "wee hours of the morning" "as if waiting for something. As if looking for something" All of the neighbors instantly side with her because they have always found Les Goodman a strange and weird person, even when Les explained to them that he had Insomnia, they didn't believe him. The neighbors then place the blame on them and keep watch on him into the late hours of the night, causing suspicion and conflict among the neighbors. This shows that conflict will follow after suspicion and blame. Another example is on page 82 and 83, when Charlie shoots Pete Van-Horn out of fear, and all of the neibors turn their suspicions to Charlie because they all think that Pete had something to tell them, and the neighborhood suspected that the "something" was information that Charlie was the monster and that he shot Pete Van-Horn to stom him from telling the neighborhood. This supports the theme because after the people of Maple Street blame Charlie and he runs away, someone throws a rock through his window and cuts his cheek with the glass, showing that it only takes a small accusation to lead to a big problem. The last example is on page 84, when Charlie averts the blame from himself and places the blame on Tommy Instead, saying, "Its... It's the kid. Its Tommy. He's the one" and the neibors beging to point out how Tommy was the only person that had any knowledge of aliens, and the only one whe said what the monsters did and didn't want people doing. After the residents begin to circle the blame again, everyone turns on eachother, aiming to kill or harm one-another. this shows that a major theme in "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that "judjing too quickly can lead to negative consequences."
