  • Hey Cam, can you please help me understand the evidence of evolution for the test tomorrow
  • Sure can, let's start with going through two lines of evidence.-Biogeography-Comparative anatomy
  • Let's get started with biogeography. Biogeography is the study of how and why animals and plants live where they do. It tells us how animals and plants adapt to the place they live and how similar places can have very different animals and plants. Biogeography teaches us why this happens.Do you remember learning about Charles Darwin?
  • Yes, he created the theory of evolution by natural selection. It was about how species change over time.
  • Think about an arctic fox and a dessert fox. They both have a common ancestor, but different adaptive traits because they have adapted to their environment over timeThe arctic fox has adapted to be able to survive in cold arctic conditions like polar bears. It has a white round small body with short ears and legs to help it conserve heat.Dessert foxes have big ears that can radiate body heat to help keep them cool and fur that is the colour of sand form camouflage
  • That's great I get biogeography now
  • The second line of evidence is comparative anatomy.Comparative anatomy is one of the strongest forms of evidence. It's compares the structural similarities and differences in anatomy of two species.
  • Oh yeah, this is important to determine how species have evolved over time when they have a common ancestor
  • That's right Harry! Similar body parts can be homologies or analogies, but both provide evidence of evolution.Homologous like hands of humans, cats and bats structures all have the same basic bone patterns that they inherited from a common ancestor but have different functions.Analogous structures are similar because they evolved to have the same type of job not because they were inherited from a common ancestor. the wings of bats and birds are a good example.
  • There are multiple types of evidence that support the theory of evolution. We just covered 2. These are just 2 of the 5 lines of evidence that support the theory of evolution. The theory of evolution is the best explanation for how life on earth came to be as it is today.

  • Thanks Cam, that will really help me in the test
