Storyboard Text

  • In the Savannah Woodlands of East Africa, there were a population of giraffes. In this population, due to natural genetic variation, there were some giraffes that had a longer neck and some that had a shorter neck. The longer neck giraffes would eat grass and the acacia leaves while the shorter neck giraffes would only be able to eat the grass.
  • Suddenly, a drought occurs and majority of the grass dies off, leaving only the acacia trees.
  • The giraffes with a shorter neck have difficulty reaching the leaves of the acacia tree while the giraffes with a longer neck are still thriving as they can reach the leaves of the acacia tree.
  • Overtime, some of the giraffes with a shorter neck die off because of lack of food resources and cannot survive in their environment while the giraffes with a longer neck survive.
  • Soon enough, the population consists of mainly giraffes with a longer neck as they were able to survive and adapt to their environment to reproduce offspring and the next generation inherited the trait of the longer neck.
  • Lastly, the giraffes with shorter necks have gone extinct as they were unable to survive and reproduce offspring to have them inherit their trait of the shorter neck. The population of giraffes have now become all longer neck giraffes.
