  • Before the Revolution:The American Revolution, 1783There were many significant events that occurred before the revolution that led up to the event itself. For example, the American Revolution directly impacted the future of France because it was a major inspiration for the French to rebel and sparked the French Revolution.
  • The Moderate Stage:The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, 1789The moderate stage of the French Revolution was caused by poverty in France, as well as the high prices of bread and starvation. It was significant to the future of France, as it caused France to become a constitutional monarchy and consisted of all the events leading up to the real violence. One event that contributed to the moderate stage was the creation of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which affirmed equal rights and freedoms for all.
  • Reign of Terror:Execution of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, October 16, 1793 / January 21, 1793The Reign of Terror was a period of time in the French Revolution caused primarily by the Committee of Public Safety executing anyone who opposed the revolution. This was significant because it sent a message that any critics of the revolution could and would be executed. Two events that occurred during this stage were the execution of Marie Antoinette and the execution of Louis XVI.
  • Reaction Stage:The Directory, 1795 to 1799The reactionary stage of the French Revolution was primarily caused by the death of Maximilien Robespierre. Some other things that led up to this stage include the anger of the French after losing to Austria and the deaths of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. Their deaths left France in need of a new leadership, and so emerged the Directory. The Directory was an executive branch made up of 5 people which was greatly corrupt and ineffective. They had terrible relations with the people of France and were incredibly power hungry.
  • Napoleonic Europe:Napoleon becomes emperor, May 1804The Napoleonic stage, the final stage of the French Revolution, began when Napoleon overthrew the Directory. This stage had a significant impact on the future of France because, during this time, France gained its first emperor. Napoleon became the first emperor of France in May 1804.
