- Cultural: Having to do with the technology, arts, and institutions of a givengroup of people at a given time. It is a tangible representation ofinteractions. Examples of cultural characteristics might include:literature, music, poetry, art, food, dialects, and slang.
- Political: Having to do with gaining, seeking, and organizing power, eventsrelated to the function of government: making laws, enforcinglaws, and interpreting laws. A political example is TheCompromise of 1850, authored by Henry Clay.
- Economic: Having to do with how people meet their basic material needs;the production, distribution, and consumption of goods andservices; including such issues as domestic and internationaltrade, monetary policies, and taxation. An example of anthe economic issue is that of tariffs being placed on imported goods.
- Social: Having to do with people in groups, their living together, includes issues such as gender,economic status, ethnicity, etc. Anexample of a social aspect of life in the South would be the institution of slavery.
