US Opens Japan (1853-1854)

- So here's some cool stuff for ya. Also sign a treaty or die.
- Japan has had their ports closed to all other countries. They want to preserve their culture from international influences and keep outsiders from coming in.
- Well I don't have much of a choice...
- The US thought that it was their purpose to spread the proper way to be civilized. So Commodore Perry decides to set sail to Japan to convince them to spread trade and new technology.
- Perry and his fleet arrive in Tokyo harbor, 1853, along with his two steam boats and two sail boats. He brings new technology and gives it to Japan as a gift. How ever Perry also says that if Japan won't sign a treaty with the US and open the ports for trade, he will attack.
- Many Japanese leaders wanted foreigners to be expelled from the country and wage war with the US instead of opening up to the world. But the general knew that there was much more of Perry's small fleet. This The event was prominent at the time because the US could devastate Japan if they decide to fight instead of signing the treaty. On the other hand, this could cause other nations to force Japan to sign treaties with them if they decide to open trade with the US.
- In 1854 Japan decides to sign the treaty with the US and open their ports to American ships. Perry's influence on Japan formed a diplomatic relation with the Western Great Powers.This reveals that Japans strategy of isolation has negatively impacted them in that there was little industrial progression, causing Japan to be weak and be forced into treaties with other countries.
- The Western Great Powers' influenced caused the downfall of the Tokugawa shogunate. It reestablished the rule of an emperor in Japan.Consequences of Perry's expedition consequently spread new technology to Japan and opened up new Japanese culture to the rest of the world.
